{"id":1813,"date":"2023-03-31T00:15:08","date_gmt":"2023-03-31T00:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/soliloquyforthefallen.net\/?p=1813"},"modified":"2025-10-25T00:59:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T00:59:11","slug":"radioddity-gb2-d-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soliloquyforthefallen.net\/?p=1813","title":{"rendered":"Radioddity DB25-D &#8220;Review&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wanted an inexpensive DMR radio for one of my vehicles so somehow I ended up with the Radioddity DB25-D.\u00a0 From what I saw it was about the best wattage for the least money once I shopped around and found it on a flash sale.\u00a0 I paired the radio with an inexpensive Retevis antenna from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B075BKMQLZ?\">amazon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, my one word review is &#8230;.. &#8220;don&#8217;t.&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s a weird little radio with a particularly offensive &#8220;flaw&#8221; which I&#8217;ll discuss in a moment.\u00a0 Otherwise, the purpose of use was to monitor my DMR repeater and to test its range in the area.\u00a0 It seems as though it will suffice in that application.<\/p>\n<p>So, &#8220;the issue.&#8221;\u00a0 When I first set up the DMR talkgroups, I couldn&#8217;t hear anything come back &#8211; it was like the radio was muted.\u00a0 But I could hear analog stations just fine.\u00a0 Then I reset the radio, it set the radio to &#8220;promiscuous&#8221; which is a DMR term for hearing all talk groups being broadcast by the repeater.\u00a0 Which made the issue more confusing.<\/p>\n<p>What I finally determined was that unless you set an Rx group, you will hear nothing.\u00a0 The solution is to create an Rx group for each talkgroup and then only add that talk group to the rx group.\u00a0 It&#8217;s stupid and madness and <strong>not what the CPS guide says.  <em>Update: This was changed in the 2023-0706 firmware this was changed to a more sensible behaviour.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another item on the list of complaints is though this is Radioddity&#8217;s radio and I bought it from them &#8230; it came with outdated firmware.<\/p>\n<p>On to other issues: the CPS is windows only.\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpeditor.co.uk\">MM7DBT&#8217;s codeplug editor<\/a> in linux by using wine to run the program.\u00a0 On Fedora 37 I also needed to install winetricks, then use winetricks to install dotnet47.\u00a0 This will install the needed libraries and you can then run the codeplug editor.\u00a0 The installer worked fine, but when attempting to run the codeplug editor I got a weird error about mono libraries.\u00a0 Installing dotnet47 also install mono.<\/p>\n<p>It looks like there&#8217;s ways to use serial ports in linux through wine, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpeditor.co.uk\/forum\/viewtopic.php?f=13&amp;t=38&amp;p=65&amp;hilit=linux#p65\">forum post<\/a> led me to a <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/davidmpye\/RT73-utils\/blob\/master\/rt73.py\">python script<\/a> that doesn&#8217;t work.\u00a0 It&#8217;s definitely not the fault of <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/davidmpye\/\">@davidmpye<\/a> as Radioddity has likely changed enough of the codeplug format so that it&#8217;s no longer compatible with the rt73.<\/p>\n<p>I did find out that I <em>can<\/em> program on Fedora Linux with the Radioddity CPS.\u00a0 First I needed to add myself to the dialout user group. Then I did the registry addition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scivision.dev\/wine-serial-port-links\/\">described here<\/a>.
